The Five Problems We See Most Often

Presenting answers without structure
Candidates often know the correct answer but cannot communicate it in a way the examiner can follow. Unstructured responses where relevant clinical points are buried in non-sequential answers cost marks, even when the underlying knowledge is sound.

Rambling rather than reasoning
Candidates who attempt to cover everything by speaking at length rarely score well. What examiners are looking for is focused, logical clinical reasoning, not a long collection of facts. Volume is not a substitute for structure.

Over-investigation
Ordering every available test is a consistent failure pattern. The CCE exam rewards clinical prioritisation, demonstrated by identifying the most appropriate investigations for the specific patient in front of you, not a comprehensive list of everything that could theoretically apply.

Missing red flags and patient safety considerations
Failing to identify or vocalise time-critical findings, deterioration risks or immediate safety concerns is one of the most heavily penalised failure patterns in the CCE. If a patient safety issue exists in the case and you do not name it, the examiner cannot give you credit for recognising it.

Missing cultural, ethical and medicolegal dimensions
The RACGP tests cultural safety, ATSI health considerations, ethical reasoning and medicolegal awareness. Candidates with strong clinical knowledge routinely lose marks in these areas because they have not practised applying this reasoning in a structured, vocalised format.
