Why Prepared Candidates
Still Fail the GPEP Written Exam
The GPEP written exam is not just a test of your medical knowledge. It is a test of how well you apply it to New Zealand general practice, under timed pressure. According to the RNZCGP Annual Report 2026, around 1 in 7 candidates did not pass.
The 3 Most Common GPEP Exam Prep Mistakes
- 01
Preparing with another country's question bank
Question banks from other countries are built on their own prescribing, screening and funding rules. Candidates who rely on them risk learning answers that do not fit New Zealand guidance.
- 02
Studying without knowing where your gaps are
Registrars prepare alongside clinical work, often without regular feedback on where they stand. Feedback on your performance is what shows you which areas still need work before exam day.
- 03
Practising without a clock
Each paper allows 2 hours for 80 questions, which is 90 seconds per question. Without regular timed practice, that pace is hard to hold across 4 hours, which can leave questions unanswered at the end.
In the Medical Council of New Zealand's 2024 accreditation review, more than 30% of trainees said it was not clear what was expected at each stage of training. Registrars who do not pass must complete a diagnostic interview and a tailored remediation process, and have a Fellow of the college on site whenever they practise. A resit also means the $2,093 exam fee again, which the college's funding may not cover.

Every resource in our GPEP preparation system is built on a single principle: Knowing the clinical evidence is only the beginning. What matters is applying that knowledge to make the right decisions in practice.
Examiner designed
An Examiner-Designed
Preparation System
for GPEP AK1 and AK2
Fellow Academy was built by practising GPs and medical educators with official examination experience. We do not teach you medicine you already know. We teach you to apply it in the New Zealand context, in the format the examiner is marking, under the time pressure the exam imposes.
The difference
What Makes Fellow Academy Different
Clinician-verified, not AI-generated
Every question is written and reviewed by practising GPs and medical specialists. No algorithmically generated content: only clinician-verified reasoning you can trust on exam day.
Referenced at the source
Each answer is supported by relevant authoritative New Zealand sources, including bpacnz, the New Zealand Formulary, Health New Zealand, Starship clinical guidance and HealthPathways, so you can be confident that what you are learning is accurate and current.
Built on New Zealand clinical standards
Questions are written around the decisions made in New Zealand general practice, including PHARMAC funding, the national screening programmes and ACC guidance.
Every answer explained
Each question includes a detailed rationale for the correct answer, option-by-option explanations where appropriate and key learning points.
Built for relevance, not volume
Our bank holds 1500+ questions, each built for the GPEP written exam and its major curriculum areas (rather than thousands of generic medical questions).
Rigorous quality control
Questions are updated every 3 months to reflect current New Zealand guidelines. Any inaccuracy reported by a candidate is reviewed and corrected within 1 week.
Not just a question bank
An Intelligent Learning Platform
Fellow Academy is built on the principle that a traditional question bank alone is not enough. Our real-world experience shows that exam prep must be built around an evidence-based learning system, not just high-volume content. That is why we created an intelligent learning platform that responds to your performance, directs your effort and ensures nothing critical is missed before exam day.
Build custom study sessions by curriculum area. Practise in Real Exam Mode for timed simulation or Casual Practice Mode for focused topic learning. Everything you purchase on the Fellow Academy Platform is accessible in a single portal, on any device.

1500+ Exam-Style Multi-Choice Questions (MCQs)
Realistic Cases Designed Around New Zealand General Practice
The GPEP MCQ Case Bank is our question bank built specifically for the GPEP written exam. Each “case” is one question: a clinical scenario with 5 plausible answer options and a single best answer. Questions include text-based and image-based clinical scenarios, reflecting standard MCQs and visual interpretation questions encountered in the GPEP written examination.

Every GPEP MCQ includes:
A detailed rationale for the correct answer, with option-by-option explanations, so you understand why each answer is right
References to the relevant New Zealand guidelines, for confidence in every answer
Key learning points summarising the most important clinical facts for efficient revision
5 reasons our GPEP exam system is different
How Fellow Academy Compares With
Other GPEP Preparation Platforms
Other Platforms
References to overseas guidelines that can produce the wrong answer in a New Zealand clinical context, without showing you where the correct answer comes from.
Fellow Academy
All questions are mapped to New Zealand guidelines such as HealthPathways and bpacnz. Each answer is checked against relevant New Zealand clinical guidance to support accurate, evidence-based learning.
We are committed to quality over volume. Rather than build the largest GPEP exam prep platform, we built the most relevant one. Nothing is included unless it is relevant to AK1 or AK2.
Voices from the cohort
Real Feedback From Doctors Just Like You
“What I liked about the bundle was that I did not have to treat the questions, notes and flashcards as separate resources. I would do a case, identify something I was weak on, read the relevant topic guide and then use the flashcards to make sure I could recall it later.
That workflow suited me much better than having a question bank from one provider, notes somewhere else and my own flashcards in another app. Everything had a clear purpose.”
