Risk Reduction
- Needle bevel parallel to dural fibres
- Use atraumatic needle (smallest gauge possible, 22G minimum)
- Replace stylet before withdrawing needle
- Minimise attempts; operator experience is key
Ineffective in Preventing LP Headache
- CSF volume removed
- Increased fluid intake
- Bed rest duration
- LP position (lying vs sitting)
Key Features
- Onset: Within 3 days (can occur up to 12 days post-LP)
- Duration: Usually resolves within 1 week; may require an epidural blood patch
- Symptoms: Postural headache (worse standing, improves lying flat) Tinnitus, dizziness, neck stiffness, vision changes Possible nausea, photophobia
